Trends in drone technologies 2021 article The Best Drones for 2021, by PC Magazine.

Catching up on Drone technology in 2021 may open some eyes, especially those who have not kept an eye on the development and marketing trends in the last five years. However, drone technology does provide a creative, challenging new tool for exploring the natural environment from a top-down field of view. Everything changes when looking down from the sky.
You Get What You Pay For
“And now the bad news. You get what you pay for, and if you want an aerial video platform that can capture stunning footage, you need to be ready to spend some cash, anywhere from a few hundred to more than a thousand dollars. Because drones are such pricey propositions, it pays to do your research before buying one.”

Drone Regulations and Safety
The rules vary from country to country, region to region. If operating a low-flying drone in a remote outback country, there are no people there to be disturbing in the middle of nowhere.
According to the PC Magazine article, the rules of the air vary from region to region.
“Typically, if your drone weighs 8.8 ounces (250g) and up, you’ll need to register it to fly it outdoors legally—even over your property.”
“There is one mass-market exception, the DJI Mini line, now in its second generation. The original Mavic Mini and the updated Mini 2 weighs just 249g, skirting registration requirements in the US and UK, and opening them up to (legal) operation in other regions.”
“Skip a safety feature—obstacle avoidance—to make weight, however. But they include all of the other expected tools to help ensure a safe flight, including GPS stabilization, automated return-to-home, and automatic takeoff and landing.”
What Are the Best Brands of Drones?
PC Maganize says that DJI models dominate the top picks, and there are several good reasons for that. The DJI company is simply a few steps ahead of its competition, and has a broad product catalog with new models at various price points.
Many years ago DJI a huge splash with its iconic Phantom series, and continues to do so with the best small drones that have been tested in the DJI Mavic series.
Its pro lines offer a lot more power, for more money. Its Inspire and Matrice models can carry heavier payloads, including interchangeable lens systems. Unfortunately, they’re overkill for most consumers, and not nearly as convenient to carry as small, folding drones.

Alternative Brands in Drone Technologies
There are other brands to investigate when considering a drone.
- Autel makes the Evo, which is similar to a Mavic, but has an LCD in the remote so you don’t need to connect your phone.
- Parrot, based in France, offers the Anafi, another good folding drone, and is an option for consumers wary of buying tech from Chinese firms.
- Sony has recently jumped into the market with its Airpeak S1. It’s set to ship this fall, but is positioned for cinema productions. It starts at $9,000 without a camera or gimbal.
