Helicopter rotor physics

Tweet @SmarterYouTube . I would appreciate it if you share this by clicking here: http://on.fb.me/ChopperPhysics . Trust me, there’s more to Chopper Physics …

The rotors of a helicopter have very complicated mechanics so that it has complete control of the 3 dimensional flight path.  How does a helicopter get lift and how does the pilot control the platform up or down.  Here are some videos that explain the physics and the mechanics of the helicopter rotors.

Helicopter rotor physics.

A helicopter main rotor or rotor system is the combination of a rotary wing and a control system that generates the aerodynamic lift force that supports the weight of the helicopter, and the thrust that counteracts aerodynamic drag in forward flight. – Wikipedia.

History of the Helicopter rotor physics.

The use of a rotor for vertical flight has existed since 400 BC in the form of the bamboo-copter, an ancient Chinese toy.[1][2] The bamboo-copter is spun by rolling a stick attached to a rotor. The spinning creates lift, and the toy flies when released. – Wikipedia.

  1. No, the square cube law (and probably other physics principles I am unfamiliar with) dictate that the rotor blades of a normal sized heli, assuming that it is to scale with the RC one, do not provide enough lift (surface area pushing air) to move the mass of the the helicopter (volume). Also, the rotor cannot spin fast enough due to centrifugal force (I think).

  2. imagine if that were a real helicopter and there were people inside. sooooo much vomit….

  3. WTF! Now I know how they create UFO videos: they hire this guy to fly an illuminated RC helicopter at night.

  4. I was proud of the fact that I could fly my little helicopter through a doorway without smashing into anything 🙁

  5. Unfortunately BF3 removed fun, you can check out BF2 which still had the element of fun in it: you could do stunts like the ones in this video there: /watch?v=HKvqyxr6SKo

  6. he should become reconnaissance uav controller 😀 -Enemy sees it-. Try to shoot me down MOTHAFOKAS !!

  9. Hey destin, I enjoy Smarter Every Day. I got some slowmotion footage of an RC helicopter. Check it out my channel.

  10. WTF!!!! If this crazy mad guy does it wiith unstable choppers…I am really worried about this man on the road! Your helmet is for the pick up ride later? Haha. Thumbs up!

  11. it was the flybar getting in the way when mowing that made em create the flybarless versions….and because some young kids were getting real good heli-mowing, the sport of RC helicopter 3D flying was born….and the rest is history……”im walter cronkite, …from washington….”

  12. “This is SED where we show you men in front of green screens f*cking physics with the best CGI you’ve ever seen!”

  13. cont’d: Finally, is there like a children’s book I could read on this to help me understand the concepts more clearly. I haven’t been able to find anything online..yet.
Also, has gyroscopic force been better defined.. I saw one lecture online which claimed that it produced a new energy that we couldn’t quite explain yet, going beyond Newton’s laws, or does ‘torque’ say it all?

  14. Hey, I was wondering if you could say a little bit more about the double bladed military helicopters. Do the blades spin in the same direction? Is one used for stability while the other orients? Why two? Does this mean there’s a limit to the force one set of blades generates?

  15. Skullmageddon: Of course helicopters can fly upside-down; don’t be ridiculous. SHRED THEM!

  16. Lipo batteries have much higher energy density with the caveat that they can catch on fire and burn if damaged.

  17. I’m pretty sure that he was fooling us all. I bet nothing was turned on, and nothing was plugged in. He is just that skilled in the ways of The Force so nobody could obtain that level of awesomeness when it comes to flying helicopters.

  18. His black hawk should be able to dodge every bullet in Somalia, as long as he don’t crash landing.

  19. well there is black magic
    there is vodo
    there is cheesy parlour magic
there is science < the one that is real magic

  20. How does he keep the RC chopper from falling while the main rotor is, at times, almost entirely vertical?

The thing seems disproportionately highly powered for its weight, and yet I thought batteries were pretty awful as far as stored energy density..?

  21. I wound up watching the Chopper series backwards, but fortunately I’ve put in some good hours in flight simulation (fixed wing and chopper) since I was small, so I’ve learned the terms and enough of this was review that I could just absorb the new stuff.

  22. You’re absolutely right, I made that comment before watching the rest of the series, in fact this series got me into the rc helicopter hobby, and I know realize they aren’t toys and enjoy using them

  23. This kind of helicopter isn’t really a toy, it’s a high powered precision flying machine. These things are deadly and can kill you if you aren’t careful. To give an example a 500 class machine is about half that size and typically has a 1500 watt brushless electric motor that delivers more power than an electric lawnmower. Even the 450’s (2 feet long long) and 500’s (three feet long) can put you in the hospital and a machine this size will just outright kill you.
